Biography
The Artist Behind The Work
Megan Ashman is a Pennsylvania-based mixed-media painter and collage artist whose work transforms memory, emotion, dreams, and subconscious imagery into surreal visual worlds.
Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Megan began painting seriously in 2011 and has created over 600 original works since then. Her paintings are rooted in intuition, movement, and discovery, allowing figures, animals, symbols, landscapes, and hidden images to emerge through layers of paint, ink, paper, texture, collage, and found objects.
Her work draws from automatism, veristic surrealism, visionary art, and mixed-media collage, while remaining distinctly her own. Each piece is built as a layered world of color, texture, symbolism, and emotion — often revealing new details long after the first viewing.
Over the years, Megan has exhibited her work, painted live, taught creative workshops, opened Megan Ashman Gallery on Gallery Row in Lancaster, and built a large online collection of original paintings, commissions, and fine art prints. Her work has been published in magazines including Vanity Fair, The World of Interiors, and House & Garden.
Her paintings are created with the belief that each piece carries its own energy and is meant to find the person it belongs to.

WORDS FROM THE STUDIO
Artist Statement
My desire as an artist is to explore and create alternative realities. To transport the viewer on a dream-like journey—toward another place or time. For them to get a deep sense of the emotion within the painting and feel as if they are dwelling in an unknown mysterious world. I strive to evoke the creative spirit. To portray meaning and emotion through a beautifully appealing state of abstraction. Each of my paintings tells a story. It is up to the viewer though, on how to portray that story.
STYLE
Phantasmagorism
I use the term Phantasmagorism to describe the philosophy and process behind my surreal mixed-media work. Phantasmagoria is defined as a shifting display of real or imagined images — something dreamlike, strange, fantastic, and constantly transforming.
This definition feels deeply connected to my art.
My paintings are built as layered visual worlds where imagery appears, dissolves, and reveals itself over time. What initially presents as abstraction gives way upon closer inspection. Hidden faces, figures, eyes, symbols, and architectural fragments slowly emerge from the textured depth. The viewer is not meant to understand everything at once; instead, the painting shifts as it is viewed, much like a dream being remembered in pieces.
This is Phantasmagorism: a deliberate bridge between the visible and the unseen. Through an alchemical assemblage of paint, paper, photographs, mica, fabric, and found objects, each layer buries and unearths a new piece of the story. These works operate as luminous, emotionally charged portals — inviting you to peer deeper, discover what was hidden, and experience art as magic.

"Each artwork is a threshold — a place where memory becomes
landscape and emotion becomes creature."
